"Pulling Her Own Weight".....

"PULLING HER OWN WEIGHT"
Original Oil On Board
Marsha Lehmann
The painting is nearing completion....just a few touches here and there to pull it together.

"The title for this painting came to me as I worked on the muscles in her neck and could see how she is pulling all the way down her neck, even the angle of her head shows her strength and determination."

"I worked from a reference
photo I had taken over her back while riding with Ryan Njos on their wagon - I was fascinated at her movement back and forth...the sound of the creaking leather straining against the weight of this large mare and all she was pulling....it is amazing to me the handling of these massive horses with all their strength and weight, is just through the gentle touch of the hand...."

Her name is Pronghorn Deb and she belongs to Ryan and Larry Njos family at Pronghorn Ranch. They have been in this business for 3 generations now, starting with Larry's dad Selmer... Ryan worked with several different teams, including Priefert Hitch, traveling all over the US.

I'd like to thank Njos' for the opportunity to photograph and paint this mare to tie in with the wagon train event Deadwood to Medora, coming through the area and ultimately help out a very worthy organization to raise funds. (Info on raffle in earlier post)
