Beautiful Last Day of November.....

The last few days of November have been beautiful! The dark blue skies against the low sun of late afternoon leave a golden hue over everything, bringing out the yellows and warmth...even Sam is enjoying the sun! (leaves a golden glow on his white hair too, leaving it with a hint of yellows) photo by MLL

Early Morning Gather - Border Collie & Sheep

"Early Morning Gather" Oil On Panel by Marsha Lehmann In Private Collection This is a painting I did in 2004 for the USBCHA- U S Border Collie Handler's Association - which was being held in Sturgis, SD that year. The dog is Joni Swanke's dog- I worked from several photos of her dog working the sheep- the sun was coming from behind the dust from moving the sheep.

Spring Twins- Angus Calves

"Spring Twins" Oil on Board by Marsha Lehmann In Private Collection This is a painting from the archives...I did this from a photo of my dad's calves lying in the sun and straw. Rob framed the No. 1 Artist Proof Print in a shadowbox of old barnwood from a corral and gave it to dad for Father's Day.......besides his family, his dog and horse...his angus cattle were a deep source of pride. This was the first "angus" painting I did, the original is in the private collection of family friends Larry & Kathy White. Dad used White's Angus bulls and these calves were out of those bulls. I had just started from pencil drawings into oil painting...there is palette knife at work here.

Bringing His Mares To Water- Bar Beaus Watch

Bringing His Mares To Water- Bar Beaus Watch This is another image of Stearns Quarter Horses...it is a pencil drawing I did in 1992, the same fall that Don Stearns passed away, I felt bad he didn't get to see it. It is of their sorrel stud Bar Beaus Watch and his mares around the water tank on a hot day...same week as I took the photo for "Noseflies & Mud"... It was fascinating to me, having always been around horses since I was small, I had never seen the studs with the mares and their interaction...their herding instincts...we did a small edition of this in print, was one of the first limited edition prints we published. This fall I donated a large canvas of this with a bible verse on the bottom for the Badlands Ministries Bible Camp Lodge- it looks very peaceful there, perfect place. Noseflies and Mud....Stearns Quarter Horse Mares

Noseflies & Mud... Stearns Quarter Horse Mares This is a new painting just off the easel... I worked from an old photo I had taken around 1991 of Don Stearns' Mares one day while they were fighting noseflies, you can see the irritation....they were covered in mud... Stearns Quarter Horse Ranch was located at Rhame, ND, which included Don's family, they had a production sale every year. Kelly & Susie Stearns have continued the name still raising quarter horses. We have a mare out of the mare on the far left. "Noseflies & Mud" Stearns Quarter Horse Mares Oil On Canvas by Marsha Lehmann 11x14

The Women of The Prairie...strong hands, gentle heart

The Women Of The Prairie Original Oil On Paper by Marsha Lehmann In Private Collection strong hands, gentle heart...the women of the prairie ...this painting has so much history...I spotted the tiny black and white photo of my sister-in-law's great grandmother one time and asked permission to paint it in color...the first thing that hit me about the photo...since I was a kid I have been fascinated with old photos and I've only seen a handful of photos showing women in this era in a strong stance as this one...it made me think of the years the women of the prairie stood strong, many times alongside their husbands and many times on their own, sometimes with a family to raise....I can think of many women I know that have raised their family on their own, from various circumstances... ...Ms Lykken was from Camp Crook area, she lived a long rich life, her great great grandchildren knowing her...a rich personality with a rich history she had seen and experienced..her

The Palette of Autumn Colors

photo of sagebrush by ML the vivid colors of summer have faded to the closer values of autumn...the bright green and yellows have mellowed to beautiful tones of umber, ochre and warm greys.... it is with delight however, our skies here are just as blue as ever!!!  and ...they show off even more against the palette of autumn...

Welcome

an artist’s journal... " I’ve found the more I learn about truly capturing something in paint, you must understand the subject -you must truly observe, and through  observation you see the beauty of God, you see it in everything, from the way the light falls on the most humble of creatures  to the massive skies and landscapes of our beautiful land." " I am so grateful to be able to not only paint but live in this unique and rugged part of the world still rich in ranching and wildlife."
